SOMA Loft
San Francisco, California
Stephan designed this San Francisco loft for his long-time friend, the artist, and gallerist Francis Mill, to be used as both his residence and his studio. With the art collection as the focus and with the desire to showcase his work in a way that could be easily adapted to accommodate new pieces, a soft palette of materials was chosen to allow the art to truly stand out.
The former warehouse turned loft, with soaring 11-foot ceilings and exposed concrete walls and floor, created an industrial atmosphere which the pair took to sophisticated levels. Furniture with a low profile allows for unobstructed views of the apartment. “Anchor zones” of stationary furniture and smaller pieces that can be easily rearranged were created. Stephan and Francis took their time to fill the home with one-of-a-kind furnishings and objects while incorporating work from Francis’ collection. Contemporary details and styling complement the artwork displayed throughout the apartment.
